Museum beetles and their larvae mainly occur as material pests in museums, where they cause considerable feeding damage to woollen fabrics and exhibits.
The museum beetle is not known as a disease vector, but in a special case it is called a hygiene pest: The arrow hairs of the larvae can cause allergic reactions on the skin or in the respiratory tract of sensitive persons. On the skin, the consequences are itchy wheals such as after a mosquito bite.
